What happens when political correctness and enviro-extremism go haywire? It's called the Democrat National Convention. This article by Stephanie Simon of the Wall Street Journal is laugh-out-loud funny. Here is a sample with the link to the full text and new terms like Director of Greening. Just remember, these are the same buffoons who want to take over OUR health care system and promise to save social security. Enjoy!

DENVER -- As the Mile High City gears up to host a Democratic bash for 50,000, organizers are discovering the perils of trying to stage a political spectacle that's also politically correct.

Consider the fanny packs.

The host committee for the Democratic National Convention wanted 15,000 fanny packs for volunteers. But they had to be made of organic cotton. By unionized labor. In the USA.
Official merchandiser Bob DeMasse scoured the country. His weary conclusion: "That just doesn't exist."

Ditto for the baseball caps. "We have a union cap or an organic cap," Mr. DeMasse says. "But we don't have a union-organic offering."

Much of the hand-wringing can be blamed on Denver's Democratic mayor, John Hickenlooper, who challenged his party and his city to "make this the greenest convention in the history of the planet."

Convention organizers hired the first-ever Director of Greening, longtime environmental activist Andrea Robinson. Her response to the mayor's challenge: "That terrifies me!" FULL TEXT

Doc,

The sad part of all of this is that one might be hard pressed to find anything like a baseball cap that is manufactured in the United Staes.

snake hunter sez,

Doctor John,

Yes, this is very humorous, but it
illustrates the power of 'Greenism'
within the Democratic Party, and that is sobering to behold. We are all environmentalists to some degree, wanting potable water, non-polluting air, fresh vegetables for
a big salad, etc. My wife & I grew up in Los Angeles. We had a very profitable concession business at major Fairs, gave it all up! Friends said we were crazy when we moved our family to the Mojave Desert.

No more crowded big city life; smog, clorinated water, gangs in the schools...never again! reb

I read this article in the Wall Street Journal. I laughed out loud at several points. I love to watch political parties trip over their own inconsistencies.

I particularly like the part about them having to order "green" china from Asia, shipped on huge, oil-burning cargo ships.

Of course, the lesson one should take away here is not only that Democrats are inconsistent, but that being "green" is well-nigh impossible, given the way the world economy actually works.

On a final note, does anyone else see the irony of Democrats hating big business and still buying from unions? After all, unions tend not to form in small businesses. Unionized labor is generally found in large businesses. Therefore, buying "union-made" goods generally supports big business.

Bottom line: don't try to understand party politics. Or Democrats.

One again, young robert-m drives home a valid point. Chicago's Mayor Daley Machine Union Politics dominates the political left, and has since 1950. Six decades!

Now, Chicago must share the podium with Black Lib, Afro-Centric Theology & 'Nation of Islam's Louie Farrakhan to combine forces in Colorado. Will it equal, or exceed the 1968 Democratic Convention violence?

"Obama-Mania" Will Rule Denver in August, either Wes Clark or Gov Richardson will get the nod for V.P....and their "grass-roots" minions are blissfully unaware. reb

robert m,

Please support the proposition that Democrats hate big business. While you are at it, research the origins of the term "Big Business."

Oh yeah, recent discussions of widfall taxes on oil companies making obscene profits do not constitute a hatred of big business.

If you are looking for irony, try and discern the logic of the GOP's statements regarding its promotion of small businesses w/ its policies toward big business.

TLGK,

To support the preposition that Democrats hate big business I point towards the fact that Democrats are generally the ones pushing for higher taxes on businesses, more governmental control of businesses, and lawsuits against big businesses.

As for looking for irony in the GOP's statements, I'm sure it exists, and could be equally examined. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because I don't like Democratic positions I must be a Republican. I'm not interested in the little games the parties like to play. I just call it as I see it, and the way I see it, the article mentioned in John's post is correct in its attitude toward the subject in my opinion.

I'm not sure I buy that argument, Robert.

After all, I support higher taxes for people in my tax bracket than I do for those in lower tax brackets, but that support in no way suggests that I hate myself. Rather, I believe in a progressive tax system, based on the notion that those who are succeeding more in our system have gained the most from being part of the system and therefore ought to pay the most to support the system.

It's not self-loathing or loathing of "my class" but just a reasonable logic-based opinion.

Hatred has nothing to do with it.

But that's probably an aside from the main gist of this post. Sorry about that.

"oil companies making obscene profits"

Define "obscene profits"

Tell me, when your 401k jumps do you complain? When the value of your house jumps, do you complain? You didn't to anything to earn either other that sit back and watch.

In the 10 years I've lived in my house I've seen values in my neighborhood more than double. Funny how no one complains about those types of profits.

At least the oil companies produce something of value.

As for the relationship between big business and liberals, that's complicated. Their rich v poor rhetoric certainly targets big business such as oil companies, drug manufacturers, credit card companies (Obama recently complaining that they "trick" people into obtaining credit cards), on and on.

But it's more complicated than that. Basically the libs want to control business to suit their own social engineering schemes, but that would take me too long to discuss here.

Have a happy Independence Day, all!

Dan,

I have no doubt you personally see higher taxes as a logical decision. I disagree that it is logical economically or morally, but that's not really important. The point is, in general, prominent liberals and Democrats, such as those who attend conventions as mentioned in the article, tend to distrust big business, or claim to in any rate.

Dan Trabue said...

There's a HUGE difference between distrust and hate. I absolutely distrust big business to do anything beyond what they perceive to be in their own best interest - and more often than not, their own short term best interest.

Dan Trabue said...

But that does not mean that I (or anyone else) hates them. Words matter.

Well, I guess that's fair. But, it's still a negative attitude. So, I think the point still stands.
