There was no "reach out". To be fair, I intended to include the "emerges" description in the post, not the "reaches out" depiction. I too did not buy that as accurate, understanding the basics of anesthesia, especially during delicate neurosurgery. In my copy&paste haste, I pasted the wrong description (and there are literally dozens of depictions about this photo, which is why I went straight to the photographers web page for the most accurate).

The hand "emerged" from the wound, or more accurately fell out. The point I was hoping to emphasize was that it was a HAND that emerged. Or, more accurately, a HUMAN HAND and not some lifeless lump of tissue, as many claim a 21 week fetus to be.

Granted, people have added their own description of events, and their inaccuracy detracts from the miracle that is captured in that photograph...begging the question, why the need to fictionalize anything about this?

This photo is incredible, whether or not the hand emerged or reached out (of course, a hand reaching out would have caused absolute chaos in the OR, certainly a big story then).

With that being said, I'll leave the post as originally written, provided people read my explanation before claiming this to be a hoax. But I thank you for your acute awareness. I missed it even in the proof read. Oh well, I guess I am fallible after all.John Washburnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04182558340478176184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21077080.post-20732897958670291192007-12-05T14:44:00.000-06:002007-12-05T14:44:00.000-06:00Great photo, John, and I agree with its message. ...Great photo, John, and I agree with its message.
